Learning in The Field – A Visit to Canadian Blood Services

The Medical Office Administrator Program at Evergreen College, like all of our programs, is focused on providing students with the employable skills they need to excel in their chosen field. To give our students an even better sense of life and work in the medical administration field, professor, Linda Cook has organized a field trip to Canadian Blood Services on College Street in downtown Toronto.
Canadian Blood Services is a national, nonprofit organization that manages large blood supplies across Canada. This field trip is an important, impactful, and interactive part of Evergreen’s Medical Office Administrator Program. As a student you’ll go through the mandatory and routine
screening processes and see how nurses and other medical staff work to make this life saving process run smoothly and efficiently.
You’ll sign up as a donor, then you’ll be directed to a processing area where you’ll answer necessary questions about your medical history and any medications you are currently taking.
Even students who are unable to donate blood for any reason can tour the premises the learn more about the blood donation process, campaigns, and the history of the Canadian Blood Services organization. Additionally, the helpful and friendly staff are always willing to answer questions, which further enhances your experience both as a blood donor and as a student.
Back in the classroom you’ll present on your experience at the blood drive and what you learned.
The eight-month medical office administrator program is perfect for students who want to work with different medical professionals and in a variety of professional environments including hospitals, assisted care facilities, urgent care clinics, and physician’s offices. This field trip enhances the experience even further by taking students out of the classroom and into the real world of medical administration.
The field trip is a prime example of the type of hands-on learning that make Evergreen College an excellent choice for career-focused students.
To give prospective Evergreen College students a clearer idea of how this experience and the Medical Office Administrator Program help students to prepare for real work in the medical field, we asked one of our students, Tenzin Dechen for a first-hand account of both.
Tenzin emphasized how illuminating the experience was from the students’ perspectives, and how urgent the need for blood donations is, as patients with serious illnesses and who have been experienced trauma require anywhere from 8-50 donors over varying spans of time.

“As an MOA, our main goal is to provide clients with effective assistance in a warm, compassionate and caring manner and we never want to make the patient feel intimidated, unhappy or uncomfortable. As our Professor Linda Cook always says, soft skills are hard to obtain because they are a person’s personal attributes, whereas, skills and knowledge can always be taught and learned anytime.”
Tenzin also credits professor, Linda Cook with bringing out the best in every student, and attracting many people to this particular program.
Medical office administrators are a crucial part of medical workplaces. They are the face of many medical departments and institutions, bridging the gap between the patient and doctors and nurses and acting as a primary point of contact. The field trip allows students to see how medical admin workers conduct themselves when dealing with patients, and how they handle each person’s medical information accordingly.
Medical office administrators are also responsible for various administrative duties including, answering phone calls, handling billing processes and addressing any related issues, scheduling appointments, and managing the sensitive information included in patient files.
Since working in this field involves so much interaction with the public and demands strong interpersonal skills, it’s important for students to go out and interact with medical professionals and witness their work first hand. The Canadian Blood Services field trip is a perfect opportunity for students to do both. They also get to experience the process from the patient’s point of view, which may provide them with some further insights.

Aside from this highly educational field trip students in this program will go through a range of hands-on training at Evergreen College. Tenzin attests to this training and how much it has enhanced the entire learning experience and makes students feel adequately prepared for entering the workforce. The Medical Office Administrator Program teaches practical skills including taking vital signs, how to use an electrocardiogram, technical skills like keyboarding and Microsoft Office, mock testing of urine and stool samples, and of course how to take blood. Tenzin notes that providing patients “with effective assistance in a warm, compassionate and caring manner” should also be one of every student’s primary goals as a future Medical Office Administrator.
